Homestead Happenings 24.7

Homestead Happenings is a weekly-ish update about what’s going on at The Northfarthing.

I know I said last time we were in “go mode” but I was wrong. Now we’re in go mode. The go mode where I don’t make myself a pan of brownies that I want so that I can go to bed early to plant things in the morning.

Ahem.

I would take brownies, I’m just saying.

Ok, so the veggie start sale was a roaring success. Last year, in addition to our weekend sale at our house, we went to two additional sales. Even with the warm weather showing up early and people itching to plant, we never left our house, thanks to the farmstand and we had just as great of a turn out. I’m hoping to get rid of a few more of these tomatoes, mostly because I will definitely feel compelled to plant them and I cannot have that many tomatoes around here.

It took us about 3 weeks to coordinate a compost delivery that was badly needed. Now we need muscle power to get it hauled off to all of the beds. After a weekend off, my to-do list is doing that thing where I can’t decide which is the most important thing.

Like, I got my sweet potato slips FINALLY. They need to get in the ground. But I need ground for them to get into. Which means moving compost. Which is hard heavy work. Which means I can’t do a ton of it before I need a break. Which means planting is going to be slow.

But that’s ok. Last year I planted potatoes this way – slow and steady. And I was extremely proud of myself when I got that finished.

No flowers yet but the first buds are coming on the calendulas. I also think I saw a bud on a snap dragon. The sunflowers look great and I am really excited to see flowers after all the work we’ve put into them.

Harvesting right now is a lot of greens, lettuce, and I was hoping the rhubarb would rally, but it really doesn’t like this heat.

We also are getting strawberries crazy early which is yummy and the best kind of surprise.

The farm stand is going to start being open regular hours. This is both exciting and a little overwhelming. Last week it took me 3 hours to get just a few things picked to have out there. But I also acknowledge that this is new and I need to have patience with the process here.
